Convergence of Medical Products

This talk will give some examples of hybrid device-drug-diagnostic products. The aim is to convince the audience that the most important aspect of convergence is not among devices, drugs, and diagnostic tools. Rather, it is the convergence of these products with medical procedures. Medical procedures add significantly to the cost of medical care. Enabling new, more effective, and safer medical procedures will require more technology, not less.

Last month, the McGovern Institute for Brain Research at MIT announced three collaborative funding awards as part of the McGovern Institute Neurotechnology (MINT) program. The goal of this program is to promote the development of innovative new technologies for neuroscience research and therapeutic applications. MINT awards are typically up to $100,000 for one year.

One of the projects is a collaboration between Ann Graybiel at the McGovern Institute and Michael Cima. Their goal is to make a device that combines a recording electrode with a precise drug-infusion system, allowing researchers to record electrical responses to pulses of drugs within the brain.
