I will discuss the exploration of carbon nanotubes and graphene in terms of unique structural and electronic properties, and mechanical, electronic, and thermal application. The materials can be used to create powerful molecular-scale (or larger) rotational and linear motors (powered by dc currents or photons), highly-integrated radio receivers operating in the commercial AM/FM frequency band, mechanical balances with single-atom mass sensitivity at room temperature, and archival memory cells. Some of these applications have resulted from advances at Berkeley in integrated microscopies, including STM/AFM/TEM/SEM.
