MIT spawns green jobs in Massachusetts
October 30th, 2009
The Street writes about national and state attempts to create jobs in the green job sector; they cite A123 and mention President Obama’s tour of MIT labs, including his meeting with Prof. Angela Belcher.

Prof. Tuller spoke at the University of Oslo
October 30th, 2009
In September, Prof. Harry Tuller spoke at FERMiO, Functional Energy Related Materials at the University of Oslo. His topic was ”Current developments at MIT within nano-ionics and mixed conducting cathodes”.
FERMiO is a five-year center, under the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (MNF), hosted at the Department of Chemistry, comprising groups in Physics and Chemistry within the respective institutes and within Centre for Materials Science and Nanotechnology (SMN).

Prof. Alex Zettl next speaker in Materials Science and Engineering Seminar Series, Nov. 5
October 29th, 2009
Exploiting Carbon Nanomaterials for Electronic and Mechanical Applications
Alex Zettl
Department of Physics, University of California at Berkeley,
and Materials Sciences Division, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory,
Berkeley, California
Thurs., Nov. 5
3:00
66-110
I will discuss the exploration of carbon nanotubes and graphene in terms of unique structural and electronic properties, and mechanical, electronic, and thermal application. The materials can be used to create powerful molecular-scale (or larger) rotational and linear motors (powered by dc currents or photons), highly-integrated radio receivers operating in the commercial AM/FM frequency band, mechanical balances with single-atom mass sensitivity at room temperature, and archival memory cells. Some of these applications have resulted from advances at Berkeley in integrated microscopies, including STM/AFM/TEM/SEM.

Prof. Cima at next MRS Lunch and Lecture, Nov. 2
October 29th, 2009
Convergence of Medical Products
Professor Michael Cima
Monday, November 2
12:00pm-1:00pm (pizza and refreshments will be served at 11:40am)
The Chipman Room (6-104)
This talk will give some examples of hybrid device-drug-diagnostic products. The aim is to convince the audience that the most important aspect of convergence is not among devices, drugs, and diagnostic tools. Rather, it is the convergence of these products with medical procedures. Medical procedures add significantly to the cost of medical care. Enabling new, more effective, and safer medical procedures will require more technology, not less.
The MRS “Lunch N Lecture” is a series of informal talks from any faculty member whose research interests are in materials. To learn more about the MRS and its lecture series, please visit the MRS Chapter at MIT. Want to see a particular faculty member give a talk? E-mail the MRS officers and give us suggestions!
