Discovery News writes about smart fiber

By implanting light-sensitive, semiconducting materials into a single synthetic fiber, and then weaving that fiber into nearly one square foot of fabric, MIT scientists have created a flexible camera that has taken a picture of a smiley face.

PhysOrg reports on cancer-monitoring device

Lab for Advanced Materials update

On Saturday July 25, as part of the lab construction on the Infinite Corridor, it will be necessary to close the passageway between Buildings 4 and 12 on the first floor from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

A contractor will be doing abatement on a pipe and their containment area will be set up in the hallway. There will be no access to the first-floor bridge between Buildings 4 and 12 from 7:00am to 3:00 pm. Temporary signage will be provided to direct pedestrians.

Dr. John S. Haggerty, Sr. Research Scientist

John S. Haggerty
October 23, 1938 – June 25, 2009

John S. Haggerty, of Lincoln, died Thursday, June 25, 2009 at Life Care Center of Acton from complications of his twenty year battle with Parkinson’s Disease.
He received the SB (Course II 1961), SM (Course III 1963), and Sc.D. (Course III 1965) from MIT.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m., July 25th at Lincoln Cemetery, Lexington Rd., Lincoln MA.

For many years prior to his retirement/disability in 1998, he was employed at MIT as a Senior Research Scientist with joint appointments in the Energy Lab, MPC, and DMSE. Prior to coming to MIT, Dr. Haggerty was a senior staff member in the Materials section of R&D at Arthur D. Little in Cambridge, MA.

In addition to his wife, Mary Jo, he is survived by two daughters, Alice Haggerty Cotter and her husband Tim of Virginia, and Caitlin Haggerty Unwin and her husband Brian of Wayland, a son, Jonathan Burns Haggerty of Lincoln, three grandchildren, Benjamin and Emma Cotter and Charlie Unwin, a brother, Edward Denis Haggerty and his wife Linda of CT.
