Prof. Chiang receives ACerS 2009 Corporate Technical Achievement Award

This week, Prof. Yet-Ming Chiang will receive the American Ceramic Society with the ACerS 2009 Corporate Technical Achievement Award in recognition of his outstanding achievement in field of ceramics, particularly in founding A123 Systems.  A cover story in the ACerS Bulletin describes how Prof. Chiang became a materials scientist and the history of A123. DMSE Alumni/ae and friends will recognize many names of instructors, colleagues, and friends.

Prof. Suresh received ASM Campbell Award

Prof. Subra Suresh has been selected by the American Society for Materials International as the 2009 recipient of the Campbell Award. Prof. Suresh will deliver the Edward DeMille Campbell Memorial Lecture on October 27 at the joint ASM/TMS/ACerS meeting in Pittsburgh.

Recipients of the Campbell Award are selected for their outstanding professional achievements in materials science and engineering as well as their excellence as lecturers.

Prof. Thomas presents Van Vlack lecture

On Oct. 20, Prof. Ned Thomas presented the Lawrence H. Van Vlack Lecture at the University of Michigan. The Van Vlack Lectureship series was established in honor of Lawrence H. Van Vlack, whose seminal introductory textbooks defined the field of materials science and engineering. It is awarded annually to a materials scientist or engineer of distinguished accomplishment. Previous lecturers with a tie to MIT include Prof. Millie Dresselhaus, Prof. Ali Argon, and Dr. John Cahn.

Prof. Suresh to give inaugural Morris E. Fine Lecture at Northwestern

Prof. Subra Suresh will present the inaugural Morris E. Fine Lecture in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Northwestern University. The lecture will take place Oct. 16 at 4 p.m. in the Ryan Auditorium of the Technological Institute. The lecture is titled, “Materials Science at the Intersections of Nanotechnology, Life Sciences and Human Health.” Learn more about the event.
